What does modding do?

Modding a PSP enables you to play PSP games in file types. That means no UMD is needed to play, all you need is a large capacity memory stick and you can store the games inside. Games are usually from 300mb- 1.5gb. There are also smaller sized games but they are mostly puzzle solving games. Most people use this way to play their games instead of lugging UMDs around. Some people are just too lazy to bring multiple UMDs along everywhere they go whereas others just don't have the money to buy UMDs. The files are in ISO or CSO extension and they can be downloaded at certain websites

Is modding a PSP illegal?

Yes it is, and sony despises because they won't get to make any money if we all just download games and don't pay for it. Sony had just made its new PSP 3000 and its unhackable. So if you looking for a PSP that can be modded, get a PSP 2000 or buy it from your friend who has no use of it.

The PSP 2000 is the one above and the 3000 is the one below. PSP 3000 shows clearer images and has a microphone at the bottom panel

The PSP 2000 is a slimmer and lighter version of the bulky PSP 1000. The bumps behind are now flat and there is brighter screen. The analog stick is also more durable than the PSP 1000. Note: The one above is the 2000 and the one below is the 1000

The very first manufactured PSP, know as the PSP Phat in hackers term and PSP 1000 in official term. This is where PSP modding started when hacking security was minimal. The analog stick could be pulled out and replaced with a PS2 analog stick instead.

How to Mod a PSP?

I won't say much here. Mostly you can buy modded PSP from non Sony Retailers. But if you have an Official Firmware PSP (Non modded PSPs), you will need a Pandora's Battery to mod it in order to play ISO and CSO games. A Pandora Battery looks like this. To find out more, go google it

A pandora battery is used to downgrade a PSP's version into an older and hacked version, which is M33(hacked firmware for the PSP).

Have fun finding out how to do it!
